Are you drowning in Facebook noise in the form of ‘news’? Are you overwhelmed by updates from your 1,000+ ‘friends’ on Facebook and a constant stream of irrelevant drivel from the hundreds or thousands of people you’ve friend-ed over the past few years?
In contrast, I usually find I go seeking what people are up to, so quiet is my Facebook news feed!
I prefer to pull information about what people are up to, rather than have it pushed to me on a relentless, never-ending basis. Would you like to know how I do this? Read on…
[Note: This is not for everyone but if your social media platforms are becoming less and less useful or appealing to you because of the noise, give it a try]
1. Un-follow & un-friend with a vengeance
While the following three actions will help mute the noise, this first step is the only way to really quieten the noise for good.
This one requires a somewhat more ruthless mindset—something which many people find difficult, not wanting to offend their ‘friends’—but, in the long term, it’s worth the effort. After all, how many of the people you’ve friend-ed do you actually want to see in your news feeds each and every day, particularly those who have a tendency to over-share?
When I first took the plunge and started to unfollow and unfriend people, I expected an uproar from people who’d been offended by my actions; it didn’t happen. What I got instead was a lovely, quiet space to re-fill as I actually wanted to, without feeling the need to have to: boundary setting at its finest.
2. Use Friend Lists
To further quieten what appears in your Facebook news feed, use the Lists functionality on your Facebook profile. I have five lists:
- Close friends
Typically, people on the Restricted and Acquaintances lists don’t appear in your stream, which instantly cuts down the noise from certain people you place in these lists.
